Students in Henrico County and Richmond are set to participate in after-school STEM "adventures" and projects virtually in a program created through a partnership of the Virginia Department of Education and Flying Classroom.
"Flying Classroom will open windows to the world and introduce students to the unlimited possibilities that await in science, technology, engineering and mathematics," Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane said in a November release about the program.
Flying Classroom is an educational organization founded by pioneering aviator Barrington Irving in 2014 to help students identify STEM-related career opportunities, the education department said in a November release.
In 2007, Irving became the youngest pilot and the first African-American pilot to fly solo around the globe.
In Irving's expeditions curriculum, students will "explore real-life applications of academic content in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the humanities," the department said in the release.
"... I know students will be inspired by Captain Irving's many accomplishments and his amazing life story," Lane said in the release.
