Washington, DC – On June 16, U.S. Representative Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) announced the relaunch of the Congressional Task Force on Digital Citizenship for the 118th Congress. Wexton founded the Task Force in 2019 to better equip Americans with the tools and resources to use technology and engage online responsibly in an increasingly digital world.
Task Force on Digital Citizenship members for this Congress include Representatives Don Beyer (D-VA), Kathy Castor (D-FL), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Bill Foster (D-IL), Bill Keating (D-MA), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Lori Trahan (D-MA), Sean Casten (D-IL), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI).
“From spotting misinformation to combating online bullying, practicing good digital citizenship is more important than ever for Americans of all ages,” said Rep. Wexton. “I’m proud to once again lead the Congressional Task Force on Digital Citizenship to start discussions here in Congress and with other stakeholders about how we can promote tools for engaging online in healthy, responsible ways as well as to offer opportunities for the public to become better educated on being good digital citizens. I look forward to getting to work with my fellow Task Force members, all of whom are leaders in Congress on these important issues.”
Digital Citizenship is the responsible use of technology and navigating the digital world in an informed, safe way. As more Americans rely on computers, the internet, mobile phones, and other digital devices in their daily lives, digital citizenship has become an essential component of engaging with society on June 16 for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Good digital citizenship involves a variety of issues including finding a healthy screen time balance, understanding online scams or threats, staying safe from online predators, identifying misinformation and disinformation online, protecting privacy, combating cyberbullying, and managing digital footprint.
The Task Force on Digital Citizenship brings together policymakers, non-profits, and businesses that are focused on promoting good digital citizenship to collaborate on best practices and share helpful resources for the public. The Task Force also facilitates discussions with educators, parents, and students about integrating digital citizenship into classrooms and other learning opportunities.
