After initially stepping back from his efforts to reopen Virginia’s schools, Gov. Ralph Northam recently reiterated his stance that the commonwealth’s schools are safe and emphasized the need to get students back to in-person instruction.
“Our schools are safe,” Northam was quoted as saying by WSLS during a recent COVID-19 update.
The new focus for Virginia’s leaders is on returning students to school, according to WSLS. This is a change from the previous emphasis on continuing virtual learning in order to limit the potential for coronavirus exposure.
Northam also said that he does not feel it will be necessary to wait for a wide distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine before reopening schools for in-person instruction, according to WSLS. With the following of proper precautions, including practicing social distancing, mask wear and appropriate cleaning procedures, students and staff will be safe.
Along with Northam’s announcement, the Virginia Department of Education released new coronavirus guidance for school boards to review and base their policies on, according to WSLS.
