Loudoun County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Dec. 27.
The LCSO is saddened to learn of the passing of Hampton Sheriff B.J. Roberts who passed away peacefully at his home Saturday morning. Sheriff Roberts was Virginia’s longest serving Sheriff.
"Sheriff Roberts was a well-respected and accomplished member of the law enforcement community having dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to public safety. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and the men and women of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office,” said Loudoun Sheriff Mike Chapman after learning of his passing.
Sheriff Roberts was first elected as the Sheriff of Hampton in 1992 and was re-elected to serve six terms. In 2010, he was sworn in as the first African American to serve as president of the National Sheriffs' Association.
He had announced earlier this month his plans to retire from the position on January 8, 2021.
