Rep. Suhas Subramanyam has issued a statement following an arson attack at Beth Israel Congregation in Mississippi. The synagogue, which is 160 years old and the largest in the state, has previously been targeted, including a bombing by the Ku Klux Klan due to its involvement in civil rights efforts.

“My thoughts are with the Mississippi Jewish community after an outrageous arson attack on Beth Israel Congregation. This 160-year old historic synagogue was once bombed by the KKK for fighting for civil rights, and is the largest synagogue in Mississippi.

This latest attack is part of a concerning increase in antisemitism in the last few years. This hatred has no place in our country. Our community stands with the Jewish community in Mississippi and around the country against antisemitism.

I will to fight for everyone’s right to worship without fear, and that places of worship are peaceful, safe and secure.”

The incident comes amid reports of rising antisemitic acts across the United States.
