U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) issued a statement marking the first anniversary of the DCA crash, which resulted in 67 fatalities, including several residents from Northern Virginia.
“One year ago, our community mourned a terrible tragedy when 67 individuals lost their lives. Many of them were from Northern Virginia or had a connection to our community. The last year has been unimaginably difficult for their families and loved ones, and they are in our thoughts today. Even in their grief, these families mobilized and relentlessly pushed for change to make sure their loved ones did not die in vain,” said Subramanyam.
He also referenced recent findings by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), stating: “The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommendations that were released this week showed that the crash was ‘entirely preventable,’ which is cold comfort to the families. My colleagues and I will work to quickly implement the NTSB’s recommendations to ensure something like this never happens again. Congress and our federal government partners must continue to do everything we can to make the DCA airspace as safe and secure as possible.”
Last year, following an investigation into the midair collision at DCA, the Military and Foreign Affairs Oversight Subcommittee concluded its inquiry and released a report on how the Department of Defense uses civilian airspace. Representative Subramanyam serves as Ranking Member of that subcommittee.
