The House of Representatives has passed a bill to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits for three years, with a vote of 230-196. The extension comes as the credits were set to expire on December 31, following opposition from Congressional Republicans who declined to support an earlier extension.
U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) released a statement after the vote:
“Extending the ACA tax credits has always been an imperative. We cannot allow health insurance premiums to skyrocket when families are already facing high costs. This vote should have happened months ago, but instead House Republican leadership decided they would rather shut down the government than save health care.
Without this extension, four million Americans stand to lose their health insurance, burdening small businesses and saddling families with higher out-of-pocket costs and medical debt.
It is clear that we need comprehensive changes to our health care system to make it more affordable and accessible. I will continue to fight for lower costs and quality, affordable care for all Virginians.”
Residents in Virginia have until January 31 to change plans on the state’s ACA marketplace.
